Goals and Objectives
Strategic Goal #1

To develop and enhance region-important research and scholarship through improved physical facilities and equipment as well as stronger industrial ties.

As one of the 12 priority departments at Louisiana State University, Chemical Engineering will help strengthen the already firm ties between LSU and chemical industries, both on local and national levels. The priority department designation puts Chemical Engineering in line for enhancement funding opportunities; and a major goal of the department is the construction of a new facility. A new building is necessary for many reasons, not the least of which include increased laboratory and classroom space to support the undergraduate program, and to attract eminent scholars in research and education to fill the remaining Cain Chairs. Planning money has been allocated for this project, and we plan to move into the next phase soon, which will be a new facility to be located in the Engineering Complex next to CEBA.

1.1 To improve the quality of physical facilities and equipment available for the chemical engineering program by 2006.
Actions
  • Continue planning a new Chemical Engineering Building.
  • Continue raising the private funds.
  • Continue modernizing existing laboratories and computer facilities to a level comparable to other Chemical Engineering curricula and departments listed as Peer and Benchmark institutions.
2004-05 Actions
  • Continuing participation in the plans for new Chemical Engineering Building. The Campus Master Plan currently supports a new facility to be adjacent to the College of Engineering in CEBA.
  • Continue active new building fundraising efforts directed at departmental alumni and associated industries.
  • Obtain in-kind industrial donations for laboratory equipment enhancements. Constraints Performance Indicator Champions

1.2 To develop the following areas of research and scholarship that are important to the industry and economy of the region:

  • Environmental Protection
  • Industrial and Chemical Plant Safety
  • Advanced Materials Processing
  • Process Control
Actions
  • Use Gordon A. and Mary Cain Endowment for the recruitment of eminent chairs and assistant professors in these regionally-important core areas.  Expertise offered by these scholars will produce chemical engineers that are well versed in these new technologies.
  • Build strong industrial ties and cooperative research in the four core areas.  Ground-floor knowledge of new technologies and industrial needs will lead to new patents being issued.  LSU Chemical Engineering and the College of Engineering can take the lead in new economic development in Louisiana.
2004-05 Actions
  • Have hired several new eminent faculty members in the areas listed above, including the two Cain Chairs and one assistant professor.
  • Recruit for Gordon A. and Mary Cain Chair.
  • Recreate industrial advisory committee and hold meetings on topic of industrial ties and cooperative research projects.
