Research

Prof. Thompson’s research is in the area of porous materials. Fundamental research topics include microscale fluid mechanics, interfacial and multiphase behavior, dispersion, solute and particle transport. General application areas include materials processing, oilfield processes, environmental transport, and separations. A major focus of the research is the development of computational modeling techniques, particularly for pore-scale and multiscale modeling.

For a complete description of the research, see the homepage for the PoreSim Research Consortium (poresim.org).

Teaching

Teaching interests are in the areas of fluid mechanics, numerical methods, and mathematical modeling. Classes that are routinely taught include ChE 2176 (math modeling and numerical methods), ChE 3101 (fluid mechanics), and ChE 7130 (graduate-level transport phenomena). Elective classes include and ChE 4296 (an advanced senior-level elective on mathematical modeling of chemical engineering systems) and a special-topics course fluid mechanics.
