Proficiency Requirements
pre-2006-2007

English Proficiency

English proficiency is a requirement for graduation. All students are advised to work continuously until the requirement is met. Proficiency is established by earning a "C" or better, or receiving advanced standing credit, in all required English courses in the ChE curriculum (English 1001, 1002, and 3002).

Basic Science and Mathematical Proficiency

The College of Engineering requires students to earn a "C" grade in MATH 1550, MATH 1552, and Physics 2101 (or the honors equivalents MATH 1551, MATH 1553, and Physics 1201) before enrolling in any course offered by any department in the College numbered above 2999 (except PETE 3025 may be taken).

The Department of Chemical Engineering requires a grade of "C" or better in each of the basic sciences preparatory courses completed - CHEM 1201 and 1202; PHYS 2101 and 2102; MATH 1550, 1552, and 2090 - before students may register for any chemical engineering course other than CHE 2160 and 2171.

Note that the "C" grade requirements listed above are more rigorous than the "D" grade required to satisfied the prerequisite requirements for individual ChE courses (see below).

Core Courses

There are 14 required core ChE courses in the curriculum. These include 12 lecture courses and 2 laboratories. A grade of "D" or above in a given course will satisfy the pre-requisite requirement for subsequent courses. However, a cumulative average of "C" or better in all core elective ChE courses is required for graduation. When planning your long term schedule, note that the upper division lecture courses are generally offered only one semester during the year.
