Technical Electives
pre-2006-2007

Preparing for the final exams
There are several categories of technical electives. These are courses you choose, within limits. The faculty periodically reviews the courses which qualify for each category. You are required to select from these departmental lists. An elective will count toward graduation credit only if it is on the approved lists during the semester you took it.

All chemical engineering students are required to take three elective courses from the following lists: one from the advanced chemistry elective list and two from the Chemical Engineering elective list.

Advanced Chemistry Electives (3 hrs)

You must take one advanced chemistry elective from the the following list:

Biol   4087 Basic Biochemistry
Chem 4010 Macromolecular Systems I (4 hr)
Chem 4011 Macromolecular Systems II (4 hr)
Chem 4160 Industrial Organic Chemistry
Chem 4551 Elemental Analysis Instrumental Methods
Chem 4552 and 4553 (4 hr) Instrumental Characterization of Organic Compounds
Chem 4561 Intermediate Physical-Organic Chemistry
Chem 4562 Intermediate Organic Chemistry
Chem 4570 Advanced General Inorganic Chemistry
Chem 4571 Organometallic Chemistry
Chem 4594 Introduction to Quantum Chemistry

ChE Electives (3 hrs)

You must take two ChE electives from the following list:

ChE 4204 Tech Petroleum Refinery
ChE 4205 Tech Petrochemical Industry
ChE 4210 Industrial Catalysis
ChE 4253 Intro. Industrial Pollution Control
ChE 4263 Environmental Chemodynamics
ChE 4260 Biochemical Engineering
ChE 4270 Processing of Advanced Materials
ChE 4275 Electrochemical Engineering
ChE 4285 High Polymers
ChE 4296 Dev. Math Models

ChE 4221, 4222 Senior Research (total 3 hrs)
ChE 4410 Special Topics in Chemical Engineering Design
ChE 4420 Special Topics in Chemical Engineering Science

Free Elective

There is one three-credit free elective in the chemical engineering curriculum. You may take any course numbered 1000 or above which is not considered remedial. (The College of Engineering considers mathematics courses through 1023 and Physics 1100 to be remedial).

Nondegree Credit

Any courses not required, or not acceptable in one of the electives groups, may be taken for nondegree credit. That is, they do not count toward toward a ChE degree. They do count in your overall GPA, your LSU GPA, and your department GPA if the course carries a ChE number.

  Substitutions
pre-2006-2007

Infrequently it has been impossible for a student to take all required courses. (For example, a course may no longer be taught). In such cases it is possible to substitute an equivalent course. Such substitution requires the approval of the department chairman and the engineering dean. Obtain permission at the time you register for the course by filing a petition form.
