There are several categories of technical electives. These are courses you choose, within limits. The faculty periodically reviews the courses that qualify for each category. You are required to select from these departmental lists. An elective will count toward graduation credit only if it is on the approved lists during the semester you took it.

Area of Concentration Electives

You must choose five concentration electives from the appropriate lists in General and area-of-concentration requirements for ChE curriculum 2006-2007. In most cases, at least two of these electives must be chemical engineering courses. Currently, the biomolecular elective is an exception because only one technical elective is being offered in the Department.

Free Elective

There is one three credit free elective in the chemical engineering curriculum. You may take any course numbered 1000 or above which is not considered remedial. (The College of Engineering considers mathematics courses through 1023 and Physics 1100 to be remedial).

Nondegree Credit

Any courses not required, or not acceptable in one of the elective groups, may be taken for nondegree credit. That is, they do not count toward a ChE degree. They do count in your overall GPA, your LSU GPA, and your department GPA if the course carries a ChE number.
