Financial Aid
Financial aid in the form of fellowships and research assistantships
is awarded to qualified full-time students. Students desiring financial
support should apply early and fully communicate their own status
and needs.
Assistantships of $17,500 per year are available for M.S. students,
with a duration of appointment of 21 months. Assistantships for
Ph.D. students start at $21,200, with a duration of appointment
of 5 years; yearly supplemental awards of either $3000 or $5000
are available for selected Ph.D. students. Assistantship contracts
are guaranteed by the
Department; if the funding of your faculty advisor should change
in any way, your assistantship will be unaffected. Increases to
assistantships are made periodically, to reflect tuition expenses;
these increases are made for incoming and for existing students.
Full-time graduate students participate in the department's undergraduate
instructional program by correcting papers, assisting in laboratories,
and other duties. Most assignments require less than four hours
per week, and the maximum allowable is 6 hours per week. While there
are no teaching requirements, if you are considering an academic
career we will allow substitution of actual teaching experience
(with a faculty mentor) for the above requirement.
